We recently completed a project for a wonderful family in Staunton, Virginia. The family approached us with concerns about the custom corner masonry fireplace in their home. The existing gas insert had been improperly installed, posing significant safety issues and resulting in substantial heat loss.
Our goal was to address these problems, bringing the fireplace up to code and transforming it into a reliable heat source for their home.
Challenges and Solutions
The first step in the project was the careful removal of the improperly installed gas insert. This revealed additional structural concerns, notably the corner post supporting the masonry, which needed to be jacked and removed.
After ensuring the stability of the structure, we built in the side and laid firebrick to meet safety standards.
With the structural issues addressed, we focused on bringing the fireplace up to code for a wood insert. The chimney was relined to optimize performance and safety. For the wood insert, we chose the Blaze King Ashford 25, known for its efficiency and reliability as a heat source.
To enhance the chimney’s durability, we performed crown repair and installed a custom stainless steel multi-flue cap. Finally, to add a touch of rustic elegance, we installed a Mantelcrete barn wood mantel, completing the transformation.

The Outcome: The family’s fireplace has been completely transformed. What was once a safety hazard and inefficient heating source is now a reliable and efficient centerpiece of their home.

Blaze King Ashford 25
The Ashford 25 is a medium sized fireplace insert. At 2.3 cu. ft., the firebox will take up to a 22″ log and can deliver warmth for up to 25 hours on low. The Ashford 25 is very clean and efficient and can heat from 400 – 1,600 sq. ft.
